- W1967444808 abstract "The existence of autoantibodies and their importance in diagnosing gastrointestinal autoimmune diseases are unquestionable. Their diagnostic specificity and role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are well studied. The possibility that autoantibodies contribute to the development and progression of some of these diseases is supported by several studies, and some autoantibodies may correlate with disease activity and treatment response. On the other hand, autoantibody production may be just the result and not the cause of gastrointestinal injury, suggesting the nonpathogenic nature of antibodies. The current evidence regarding the pathogenic role, available methods for detection, diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, and up-to-date recommendations for clinical use of the main gastrointestinal autoantibodies that associate with IBD, celiac disease, AIH, PBC, and PSC is reviewed in this chapter." @default.
