- W1967507770 abstract "Abstract Metallographic studies were carried out on the U2C3 transformation from uranium carbides characterized by the phase of the immiscibility region and Widmanstatten structure. The following results were obtained. The U2C3 phase grew along Widmanstatten UC2 congregating at an initial stage. The amount of U2C3 in the specimens having Widmanstatten structure was determined by the amount of Widmanstatten UC2. The sintered pellet in the phase of the immiscibility region exhibited the consumption of herringbone UC for U2C3 transformation. Decomposition of UC2 with excess carbon was found to be enhanced, compared with UC2 without excess carbon. From the metallographic examination and X-ray study, the U2C3 phase was found to be transformed inward from the outer surface of the specimens. Rates of U2C3 transformation for the arc-melted and sintered specimens (C/U ⋍ 1.5) are expressed by the following equations, respectively: K = 0.40 exp (− E1/RT) cm2·s−1, K = 0.29 exp (− E2/RT) cm2·s−1, E 1 = 48.3 ± 7.4 kcal mol , E 2 = 40.9 ± 4.8 kcal mol . These phenomena are also considered to be related to the removal of the dissolved oxygen from UC2 and to the carbon diffusion process. Microcracks and wrinkling of Widmanstatten UC2 were observed, accompanied by volume contraction due to the U2C3 transformation." @default.
