- W1967535002 abstract "Abstract A marked change occurred in marine microfaunas of the southern California area at the end of the Pleistocene about 11,000 years before the present. A shift from sinistral (Pleistocene) to dextral (Recent) populations of Globigerina pachyderma (Ehrenberg) is accompanied by the appearance in the Recent sediments of dextral populations of G. subcretacea Lomnicki, by an increase in numbers of orbulina chambers, and by a dramatic increase in the abundance of radiolarians. The Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, more than 3 million years before the present, is defined by a definitive shift from dextral (Upper Pliocene) to sinistral (Lower Pleistocene) populations of G. pachyderma. Evaluation of paleobathymetric conditions at this boundary in different parts of the Los Angeles Basin shows that a differential bottom topography existed with different groups of benthic foraminiferal indices in different areas within the Basin. Thus, well-known benthic foraminiferal indices used formerly to define the boundary are shown to vary several hundred meters stratigraphically with respect to the time line determined by coiling ratios of G. pachyderma." @default.
