Nigerian families constitute a part of this immigrant presence in Ireland, underlying a discernable contrast to previous patterns of male, or single migration from Nigeria. Based on a visual ethnographic work on Nigerian immigrant families in Ireland, this paper explores the dialogic relation between the Irish state and its Nigerian immigrant family subjects. On one hand, the paper evaluates regulatory immigration and citizenship policies, with a special focus on the institution of Direct Provision for asylum seekers in Ireland, to demonstrate how the Irish state suspends and alters generally applicable rights and laws based on the necessity to discourage the inflow of particular immigrants populations.
