- W1967747597 abstract "The problem of grouped data with unknown sample size occurs naturally when continuous monitoring of life testing experiments is not feasible. For example, Moranda (Proc. 4th Ann. Texas Conf. on Computing Systems (1975)) gives data on detection of errors in software which can be described as a grouped sample of unknown size. Here, we develop general techniques to analyze such data. The maximum likelihood and maximum modified likelihood estimators for the distributional parameters and the unknown sample size, N, are investigated. It is shown that ungrouping the data by uniform spreading over the intervals and then applying methods for ungrouped data does not produce consistent estimators. Finally, the special case of the exponential distribution is discussed in detail and simulation results are obtained for this case. Monte Carlo studies are used to study small sample properties, and one estimator is singled out for recommendation." @default.
