- W1967851432 abstract "The in-situ activations of oxide, Medicus, and impregnated dispenser cathodes in UHV have been studied by a combination of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and line of sight residual gas analysis (LOSRGA). The surface composition changes, emission thresholds and outgassing curves exhibit similar thermal behavior regardless of cathode type. Three stages of behavior were apparent with increasing temperatures: (1) production of CO and CO2 in nearly equal amounts; (2) electron emission with an increase in both surface and evaporated Ba; (3) appearance of BaO. The complementarity of AES and LOSRGA is discussed and the necessity of the line of sight configuration is explained. The utility of spectrum subtraction as an adjunct to line of sight RGA for quality control is also demonstrated." @default.
