- W1968216520 abstract "When graphite is used as the moderator in CO 2 -cooled reactors it sustains a radiation-induced oxidation which can lead to significant loss of weight, especially in highly rated systems. The factors which determine the rate of oxidation are examined and incorporated into a general equation. It is shown how to calculate the oxidation rate when graphites with different porosities from Grade A are used and also when the CO 2 coolant contains additives which inhibit in-pile oxidation. The variation of oxidation rate within the core as a whole and within a single unit cell is considered in detail, thus making it possible to estimate the rate in such important regions as fuel element sleeves and channel walls near to peak-rated fuel. Since oxidation occurs within the pores of the graphite, with a consequent increase in porosity, the rate will accelerate with burn-off. Equations are developed to allow for this effect when calculating the cumulative weight-loss. Finally, to illustrate the methods described, worked examples are presented for Calder and a typical Civil A.G.R." @default.
