- W196821704 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter focuses on the chronological age, bone age, and lineal growth of child. Chronological age alone has not been sufficient to determine the state of development of any child because an average of each age group left out both the very tall and the very small. Close to the start of the second decade of life, certain changes begin to occur that indicate the end of childhood and the initiation of adolescence. Studies on bone maturation suggest that if a child is tall for its chronological age, its bone age will also be advanced, although perhaps not to the same extent; however, if a child has reached a given height more rapidly than its fellows, it will have a younger bone age than they have. Large-scale experiments on animals and complementary information from human data have duly emphasized the importance of nutritional factors upon child growth. The studies of growth have shown that the rate of development depends largely upon the environment, and the tempo of life will remain the same only when the temperature, food supplies, and other external factors are the same for one generation as for another." @default.
