- W1968327667 abstract "The method of measuring the emulsifying capacity (E.C.) of blood sera, as described by Breyer and Goodwin4, was applied to the study of human sera. It was found that: (I) Lipaemic sera showed relatively less ability to emulsify added olive oil than did non-lipaemic sera. (2) The E.C. was independent of both the total protein concentration and the albumin/ globulin ratio of the sera tested. (3) The addition of 0.25–0.5% alcohol, or of small concentrations of bile salts, left the E.C. unchanged. The results obtained in obstructive jaundice, so far, were inconclusive. (4) The injection of heparin produced a marked decrease of the E.C., both in sera exhibiting a pronounced post-prandial lipaemia and in sera which showed little or no post-prandial lipaemia. In vitro addition of heparin to the serum produced no change in the E.C. It seems most likely that the lowering of the E.C. on heparin injection is due to the splitting of the neutral fats by the clearing factor produced, and the consequent attachment of the free fatty acids to the plasma albumin. In accordance with the above hypothesis, the method was successfully applied to the investigation of fat absorption in patients suffering from malabsorption syndrome." @default.
