- W1968600175 abstract "Recovery of eye movements of fish after the IIIrd and IVth nerves had been cut in the cranium was followed by measurement of gravitational reflexes. The oblique oculomotor system of those fish that recovered completely was examined by electrophysiological and electron microscopic techniques. The inferior oblique nerve of all these fish contained a heavy proportion of axons with reflex discharge patterns characteristic of other oculomotor nuclei, particularly the superior oblique. Even after removal of the muscular antagonist there was no rotation of the eye attributable to axons with inappropriate discharge patterns causing contraction of the inferior oblique muscle. All nerve endings in the muscles appeared normal by electron microscopy. It is concluded that there is a peripheral failure of transmission from foreign nerve axons, which either do not form normal neuromuscular junctions or those that do form are normal in appearance but do not work. The eye muscles of fish that did not recover movement were also examined and several cases were innervated at the normal density. This shows that re-modulation of motoneurone discharge patterns cannot be the mechanism for recovery of function and suggests that dominance of the correct innervation may not be the inevitable outcome of reinnervation of these muscles by a mixed motor nerve." @default.
