At high storage temperature and without the supply of external substrate, endogenous respiration rate of aerobic granules should be significantly high, leading to a fast disintegration of aerobic granules. Thus, it seems necessary that the authors should specify the temperature at which granular sludge was subject to the extended idling. Tay et al. [2] examined the effect of storage period of glucoseand acetate-fed aerobic granules on granule activity and structure, and found that the aerobic granules grown on glucose only lost about 60% of initial metabolic activity in terms of specific oxygen utilization rate (SOUR), while the activity of the acetate-fed granules was reduced by about 90% after 4 months storage in tap water at 4 C. Ng [3] also studied the effect of different storage solutions, e.g. tap water, physiological and nutrient solutions, on the stability and activity of aerobic granules stored for a period of 8 weeks at 4 C, and observed that the granules in all storage solutions became more irregular and smaller at the end of week 8 as compared to fresh granules at week zero, and release of soluble organic materials accompanied with a drop of the solution pH due to cell hydrolysis was detected.
