- W1968664511 abstract "Humic compounds were reported to be generally similar in structure. Indications that differences in environmental conditions could have effected changes in the nature of humic compounds are available, however. The present study was conducted to evaluate variations in soil humic compounds as related to soils and analytical differences. To include a wide variety of environmental conditions, two Alfisols, two Mollisols, two Ultisols, and two Vertisols, located in different regions of the USA, were sampled and analyzed for humic and fulvic acids and extractable Si, Al, Fe, and Mn contents associated with organic matter. The results indicated that the Mollisols, with the largest amounts of organic matter, were characterized by the highest concentrations of Na4P2O7-extractable Al and Fe in the A horizons, among the four soil orders studied. The Vertisols contained high extractable Si and appreciable Fe and Al contents, suggesting that the humic compounds in the Vertisols might not only be associated with large amounts of extractable Ca, but that Si, Al, and Fe extractable by Na4P2O7 have also played an important role in their formation and accumulation. More humic (HA) than fulvic (FA) acid was isolated in the Mollisols and Vertisols than in the Alfisols and Ultisols. In the Ultisols six to seven times more FA than HA was extracted with Na4P2O7 in the A horizons. A negative correlation was found between total soil N, Na4P2O7-extractable Al and Si, and FA/HA ratios, confirming that N and extractable Al and Si contents were more closely associated with HA than FA. Analytical procedures and differences in soil groups have affected the changes in infrared spectra. Na4P2O7 yielded HA with better resolved spectra than NaOH, and allowed for the definite distinction in HA spectra between soil groups. Differences in HA spectra between soil groups were attributed to inherent different soil conditions." @default.
