This immune response was recently found to be directed to a 33-mer peptide of the gliadin component of gluten. Elimination of gluten, the cornerstone of treatment for Celiac Disease (CD), may dramatically influence the course of the disease and prevent complications, among which are osteopenia, malignancy, and miscarriage. With the recent introduction of newer and more precise serologic tests—such as antibodies against tissue transglutaminase (tTG)—significant progress has been achieved not only in exploring the genetic basis, clinical course, and epidemiology of the disease but also in understanding its pathogenesis. Although Celiac Disease is considered an immunologic disease, infection may play a role in several aspects of Celiac Disease. This chapter elaborates on the possible role of infection in the pathogenesis of Celiac Disease.</ce:simple-para></ce:abstract-sec></ce:abstract></dm:abstracts>" @default.
