The new system provides an early warning of blowout or lost circulation problems aboard floating drilling vessels. The system can be adapted for use on any floating mobile drilling unit to provide an early indication of downhole fluid intrusion to or lost circulation from a well being drilled into the ocean floor.IntroductionThe first indication of a well kick or lost circulation problem is a change in drilling fluid return flow from the wellbore. It is important to detect both kicks and lost circulation problems early so they can be controlled without damaging the well.It is very difficult to determine the return flowrate of drilling fluid on a heaving floating drilling rig. The problem is caused by the pumping action of the telescopic joint in the marine riser as the drilling rig responds to the sea. For example, a six foot vessel motion with a period of fifteen seconds causes a 1200 gpm amplitude oscillatory pumping action in a twenty inch diameter telescopic joint. The pumping action of the telescopic joint alters both the quantity of fluid stored in the marine riser assembly above the telescopic joint and the flowrate of fluid leaving the marine riser through the flow line. This variable flowrate of drilling fluid in the flowline masks changes in return flowrate caused by downhole phenomena.Until now, it has been customary to use the mud pit level indicating system to detect kick or lost circulation problems on floating drilling rigs. Rig motion affects readings of the mud pit level indicating systems because the mud sloshes in the pits as the floating rig responds to the sea. Variations in the mud pit level due to rig motion are relatively less severe than the variations in the return mud flow rate measured at the flowline. Response of the pit level indicating system is slow because the mud flowrate must act for some time to change the amount of mud in the pits.Conceptually, there are several methods to correctly account for the variations in return mud flowrate caused by rig motion. All methods are comprised of various combinations of hardware and applied analytical techniques. The method used in this system for measuring return mud flowrate on a floating rig is to monitor all fluid stored in and leaving the upper riser assembly. This data can then be manipulated to yield the flowrate of drilling fluid entering the upper riser assembly which is presumed to be the flowrate of fluid leaving the wellbore.
