- W1968916998 abstract "The physiopathology and adaptive mechanisms of protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) was briefly outlined. Animal studies examining the effects of PCM on behavior were then evaluated and it was concluded that the interpretive value of these studies is limited. The problems associated with research in this area were divided into three broad categories: (1) insufficient attention to the general physiopathology and adaptive mechanisms of the protein-deprived animals; (2) imprecision in behavioral categorization and analysis; and (3) inconsistency in research methodology. Despite these problems the finding of an abnormal response to arousing stimuli emerged fairly consistently. It was suggested that this increase in emotionality may be linked with the altered hormonal functioning, particularly in the pituitary—adrenal system, associated with PCM adaptive mechanisms. Directions for future research are suggested, particularly investigations into the relationship between hormonal and behavioral dysfunctions." @default.
