The general treatment begins with a system composed of N point charges interacting with each other and with the quantized electromagnetic field. We work in the Heisenberg picture and derive the operator equations of motion for the particles. The resulting set of coupled equations is then specialized to the case of phonon polaritons using the 11-parameter rigid-ion model. A long-range dynamical matrix that includes the effects of the quantized electromagnetic field is derived. In the correspondence limit for the field, we derive the dynamical matrix for phonon polaritons obtained by other authors using less rigorous techniques [H. Chu and Y.-C. Chang, Phys. Rev. B 38, 12 369 (1988)]. Our derivation therefore elucidates the approximations inherent in the expressions used by other authors." @default.
