- W1969124634 abstract "Biogeochemistry mediates most of the fast changes triggered by global environmental change. As a result, biogeochemistry has become a crucial component of Earth system science. The scheme presented in this paper, the Analytical Biogeochemical Cycling (ABC) scheme, provides a new formalism to address biogeochemical issues. ABC can be used in two modes. Indeed, while ABC can be employed to simulate soil carbon dynamics, and, thus, provide a means to close “full carbon budgets” as recommended by the International Geosphere-Biosphere Project (IGBP) Terrestrial Carbon Working Group and provide vital environmental intelligence to policy makers. In addition, the ABC can also serve to uncover the intrinsic stability properties of a given biogeochemical system and enable planners to gain insights into its responses to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. Because the solution is exact, ABC is fast, accurate and versatile. The paper is divided in two main parts. First, the analytical solution which constitutes the core of ABC is presented along with answers to a series of generic nutrient cycling questions. As explained in the first part, the solution offers a tool to study the effects of `splitting' or `lumping' pools on soil biogeochemistry, allows soil carbon models to be run forward and backward in time, opening up new ways to calibrate and to test biogeochemical models with field data and, finally, the solution makes it possible to use different time steps during calibration, verification and simulation. Then, in the second part of the paper, the issue of how the soil system modulates climatic perturbations is examined. Does the soil system amplify climatic perturbations? Does it dampen them? Or, does the soil system simply transfer the climatic perturbations unchanged? The stability analysis of some 1,564,080 cases suggests that soil carbon dynamics should not amplify the direct forcing of climatic perturbations." @default.
