- W1969456989 abstract "Abstract Since its initial observation by Ebert et al. in 1977 (Appl. Phys. 14, 155) there has been two qualitatively different explanations for the unusual field and temperature dependence of the spin-flip spectra in p-InSb. Ebert et al. [Phys. Rev. B 23 (1981) 6570] suggested that their spectra arose from photoexcited free electrons and free holes, whereas Scott [Phys. Rev. Lett. 44 (1980) 1358 and Rep. Prog. Phys. 43 (1980) 951] interprets the low-frequency spectra as free to bound transitions. In the present paper the disappearnce of the electron spin-flip cross sections above 4 T is shown to be strong support for the latter interpretation, as are the α jj polarizability selection rules for the hole transitions. Most important, the g ≈ −43 gyromagnetic ratio for the observed electron spin-flip spectra shows that the electrons have k ≈ 0; the theory of Ebert et al. requires, to the contrary, photoexcited electrons (and holes) with k ≈ 5 × 10 5 cm −1 , but such electrons would have g ≈ −10 and are thus incompatible with the data. These problems suggest that the very recent extensions to the 1981 analysis by Ebert et al. [Wolfstadter et al., Phys. Rev. B 37 (1988) 10256, 10260, 10264; Trebin et al., Phys. Rev. B 37 (1988) 10249], in which the additional effects of uniaxial stress are included, may be based on a free-hole model that is qualitatively incorrect." @default.
