- W1969857518 abstract "It is argued that the usual observables of quantum gravity are unphysical because of a confusion which has been allowed to develop between gauge fixing and defining a realistic coordinate system in which to make observations. We avoid this problem by reformulating the theory on the Green's functions of a new interpolating field—the Mandelstam covariant—constructed solely from geodesics, parallel transport, and the Riemann tensor. This interpolating field is nonlocal in all gauges and therefore may not give the usual S-matrix beyond tree order. It also seems to provide an operatorial, relative notion of time which agrees with the usual one for classical, asymptotically flat space but which disagrees on the quantum level and makes sense even when space is closed. We prove that field redefinitions of this general type—although not this one—can avoid ultraviolet divergences." @default.
