- W1969960839 abstract "The effects of pH, Al3+ and Al/Ca ratio on two acid-tolerant and three acid-intolerant aquatic plant species were studied during 10 weeks in a culture experiment. The acid-intolerant species died within 8 weeks at pH 4 and 5, while after 10 weeks the acid-tolerant species were still vital. At pH 3 the acid-intolerant plant species died and disintegrated within 1 week, while the acid-tolerant plant species remained vital for 6–7 weeks. Addition of aluminium (100 μmol 1−1) as well as the application of various Al/Ca ratios had no visible effect on the vitality of the tested plant species. Changes in the Al/Ca ratios did not affect the concentrations of aluminium, calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen in the plant tissue of the isoetid morph of Luronium natans (L.) Raf. while the calcium and phosphorus concentrations increased in Ranunculus ololeucos Lloyd tissue with increasing Ca2+ concentrations in the culture medium. The data indicate that the disappearance of the investigated soft-water plant species after acidification is not caused by aluminium toxification. The disappearance of acid-intolerant plant species in acidifying waters with sufficient nitrate, dissolved inorganic carbon and relatively low ammonium concentrations is probably a direct effect of the proton load of the ambient water." @default.
