- W1969984785 abstract "The spermathecae of females of 20 species of Eriophyoidea (two Nalepellidae, two Rhyncaphytoptidae, and 16 Eriophyidae) were examined in situ for the presence of sperm. Both Rhyncaphytoptidae and 14 of the 16 Eriophyidae stored sperm consistently in only one of the two spermathecae. None of these stored sperm predominantly in the left or right spermatheca, and in each the sperm-filled spermatheca was nearly the same size as the sperm reservoir of the spermatophore. There was evidence that species storing sperm in only one spermatheca are normally inseminated only once. The other four species, two of Nalepellidae and two of the three grass-infesting Eriophyidae, stored sperm consistently in both spermathecae. In three of these four species, one of the two sperm-filled spermathecae was at least as large as the sperm reservoir (spermatophores of the fourth species were not available), suggesting insemination from more than one spermatophore. The data on sperm storage suggest an evolutionary connection between the method of sperm storage and the taxonomic position of the host plant. Predominance of sperm storage in only one spermatheca among species parasitic on dicotyledonous hosts and absence of this type of sperm storage among the relatively primitive family, Nalepellidae, suggest that sperm storage in one spermatheca may constitute an evolutionary advancement over sperm storage in both spermathecae." @default.
