An unexpected finding is that, for a significant number of materials, solutions to the equation for evaporation field do not exist for some charge states. With some exceptions, these mathematical results correlate well with the observations of the charge states of field evaporated ions. The inclusion of the field-energy term gives improved agreement between predicted values of the field for zero activation energy and the experimentally derived estimates of this field, but significant discrepancies remain to be explained. Quantum-mechanical calculations will need to take into account this field-energy term." @default.
