- W1970085148 abstract "Abstract Challenging times are ahead, and students today face a pressing demand to transform into young professionals (YPs) by quickly developing the necessary skill sets. We believe they can meet this demand more easily by retaining their membership in SPE after graduation. One way to ensure that today's students will continue their memberships and their involvement in SPE as they become petroleum industry professionals is to reach the SCs locally through the SPE Sections. We propose that professional Sections fill this gap between SCs and professional membership by introducing Sectional Student Development Committees (SDCs) that could act as bridges between the International SDC and SCs. Formation of a Sectional SDC would allow liaisons to distribute the workload among other members of the committee to help the SCs achieve higher goals and better understand the value of continued participation in the Society. Introduction The SPE International Student Development Committee (SDC) oversees student activities including student paper contests and student chapter (SC) activities, but, especially with the availability of sponsored membership for all students, this committee cannot focus on each and every SC individually and across the globe. Conventionally, Sections have appointed liaisons to SPE chapters to help them out in their endeavours, but communication between the liaisons and the SCs can be improved. In fact, recent efforts to survey SPE Sections associated with SCs have returned minimal responses from the individuals charged with coordinating with the students, which may suggests that they have not have maintained close relationships with the groups they sponsor. Promoting relationships between professional Society members and students is of utmost importance for their career development. Additionally, a number of of SPE SCs across the globe are physically isolated from active SPE Sections but need guidance and encouragement to develop the technical, service, and social programs that make SPE membership meaningful to professionals. Our review of the annual reports from SCs around the world, as well as our evaluation of those reports in selecting the outstanding chapter for each region, shows us that many SCs are already working to the highest standards, although some are in need of resources (in both personal interaction and funding) to do much more than maintain their status as recognized chapters. As a solution, we propose that professional Sections fill this gap between the SDC and SCs by introducing Sectional Student Development Committees (SDCs) that could act as bridges between the International SDC and SPE SCs. Since the SPE Sections are generally nearest the SCs, they have the advantage of being able to get in touch with students quickly and personally. We believe formation of a Sectional SDC would allow the liaisons to distribute the workload among other members of the committee to help the SCs achieve higher goals and better understand the value of continued participation in the Society. For those SCs that are not located near active Sections, we encourage Sections that already work with SCs to foster communication between the established chapters and one or more emerging chapters to transfer ideas and best practices. As a cooperative effort between some of the mature student chapters and their sponsoring Sections, we believe we could encourage more interest in professional membership even among those chapters that are a long distance away and struggling. Alternatively, Sections that do not currently work with an SC could assist the local Sections in advising and assisting SCs using the same technologies the industry already uses for global communications." @default.
