- W1970200616 abstract "The fourth edition of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine continues to represent the “Holy Grail” of hospice and palliative medicine—now even more so—for the world. The first edition, introduced in 1993, was the single source for the new field of hospice and palliative medicine, presenting state-of-the-art information for that time. The fourth edition represents a world-class endeavor: The editors emphasize that the content, authors, and editorial team have continued to “develop” and “evolve” to create an international text that is relevant and easy to read. The fourth edition parallels our field in its maturation: The mainstreaming of palliative care as a clinical specialty is occurring before our eyes, along with the need to present translational research and to establish a research base. The primary goal of the Oxford Textbook is to “provide practice guidance in the translation of research into clinical care.” Nearly 200 authors from 16 countries and six continents present the most relevant literature for the traditionally wide array of palliative care topics. In addition to the broad coverage of topics and geographic regions, the fourth edition also provides more in-depth treatment of topics. For example, detailed information on pain management from a mechanistic perspective is presented in the subsection on pain, with chapters focused on “bone pain,” “neuropathic pain,” and “breakthrough pain.” In addition, cutting-edge technological applications are reviewed in chapters such as “Informatics in Palliative Medicine” and “The Role of Surgical Neuroablation for Pain Control.” The current edition of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine continues to represent the single brightest light on the shore of our field, steering all professionals toward “safe harbor” through a common understanding of the myriad complex issues coupled with an international standard of caring. J. Cameron Muir, MD, FAAHPM, is Executive Vice President for Quality and Access, Capital Hospice, Washington, DC, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Oncology, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA." @default.
