- W1970203783 abstract "The year 1985 marked the tenth anniversary of the communist victory in Vietnam. In the aftermath of this foreign policy disaster, America's interest in the Third World shifted elsewhere, notably to Central America and the Middle East. Mean while, changes have occurred within the countries of Southeast Asia and in their international relations which bear directly on the global competition between the superpowers ? the United States and the Soviet Union. This paper assesses the current state of superpower competition in South east Asia. The first section identifies U.S. and Soviet objectives and interests in the region. Four subsequent sections examine the geographic, military, political, and economic assets and liabilities possessed by each of them in Southeast Asia. These assets and liabilities are assumed to be valid indicators of how successful a super power would be in protecting its interests and attaining its objectives in competi tion with the other superpower. The last section summarizes the discussion and makes some concluding comments. In the discussion which follows, Southeast Asia will be defined to include the six countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore) belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the three Indochinese countries (Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam), and the bodies of water surrounding and connecting all of these countries. Burma, an acknowledged neutralist country, is appropriately left out of this discussion." @default.
