- W1970576071 abstract "Abstract New14N NQR data have been obtained for glyoximes (HONCX)2, X = Cl, C6H5, and CH3, and for bis(glyoximato)metal(II) complexes, M(HO2N2C2X2)2, X = CH3, C6H5, or Cl when M = Pd, X = CH3 when M = Ni. The data for the complexes show marked reductions in14N quadrupole coupling constants as compared with the free ligands. The altered values are interpreted in terms of changes in nitrogen orbital occupancies and bond angles, using Townes-Dailey theory. Equations expressing the field gradient tensor at nitrogen in terms of hybrid orbital occupancies are given for the most general case of low symmetry about a planar nitrogen. The nitrogen orbital directed toward the metal is estimated to have an occupation number of 1.65 in Ni(DMG)2 and 1.75 in Pd(DMG)2, as compared with 2 in the free ligand. The higher value for the Pd complex is not in accord with expectations based on relative electronegativities of the metals. The complexity of the changes occurring about nitrogen upon complexation of these ligands precludes effective use of a simple model to analyze small differences between complexes." @default.
