- W1970786746 abstract "1. Dehydrated Arenivaga sp. nymphs and adult females absorb water vapour from relative humidities above 82·5 per cent at temperatures from 10–30°C. Adult Arenivaga males, Periplaneta americana nymphs and Blatta orientalis nymphs do not. 2. Absorption is faster at higher temperatures, ceases when the insects are rehydrated and is temporarily inhibited by moulting. 3. Water derived from oxidation of food reserves is only a small fraction of the net water gain. 4. Haemolymph osmotic pressure is strongly regulated against the effects of dehydration and rehydration. 5. Light abrasion of the cuticle leads to increased transpiration but is rapidly repaired. Painting the abraded area permits an immediate net uptake of water vapour. 6. The energy expenditure involved in absorption is very small compared with the insects' basal metabolism." @default.
