- W1970826613 abstract "Summary A technique has been developed to clean used submersible pumps chemically without the expense of tearing down the pump and rebuilding it. After the cleaning process, the pump is tested and its performance is plotted against the manufacturer's catalog curve. More than 70% of the pumps put through this process have been rerun without being rebuilt, with substantial savings to the operator. This paper discusses the process used in cleaning and inspection. The test bench will be described, along with the metering accuracy and calibration techniques. Use of the actual pump curve for improving production will be covered, along with statistical data on more than production will be covered, along with statistical data on more than 1,200 new and used pumps. Introduction Before the introduction of this cleaning and testing service, submersible-pump operators had two alternatives when a unit was pulled. They could elect to rerun the pump. This decision was usually based on the fact that pump. This decision was usually based on the fact that the pump was running satisfactorily before it was pulled. Alternatively, the operator could send the unit in for repair. This was usually done on an exchange basis with the pump manufacturer. Often, pumps that were running satisfactorily before being pulled for another problem downhole would be sent in for repair to avoid a possible short run because the actual condition of the pump was not known. The cleaning and testing service was developed to give the operator an inexpensive means of determining the performance of the used pump. With these performance data, performance of the used pump. With these performance data, the operator could easily determine whether the pump should be rerun or rebuilt. To make the service attractive and usable by the operator. the following guidelines were established. The service had to cost less than 10% of the cost to exchange and rebuild the pump that was being cleaned and tested. The service had to offer rapid turnaround for a pump being cleaned and tested. The pumps should be tested by the piece to minimize repairs when pieces are determined to be bad; i.e., if one piece of a five-piece pump was found to be plugged and piece of a five-piece pump was found to be plugged and the other four passed the test, then the operator would have only one piece to repair. The test procedure and instruments would conform to the Hydraulic Inst. Standards. To meet these goals, the pumps were tested horizontally instead of vertically. Horizontal testing allows for faster turnaround in the test cycle because of the ease of preparing for the test (hookup). It was also discovered preparing for the test (hookup). It was also discovered that problems with spinning defusers and pinhole leaks in housings could be easily detected on the test bench." @default.
