- W1970838861 abstract "Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of progression in BMI category on maternal and fetal outcomes. Study design: A prospective cohort study was conducted from August 2005 to July 2007. Filipino singleton pregnant women aged 20–40 years old seen at Veterans Memorial Medical Center, had their first prenatal check-up on or before 20 weeks age of gestation were classified according to their BMI Category. Increase in BMI category was calculated as difference between baseline BMI and BMI upon delivery. Results: A total of 654 pregnant women qualified in this study: 186 (28.44%) had no change in BMI category; 312 (47.71%) increased by 1 BMI category; and 156 (23.85%) increased 2 or more BMI category. Increase in BMI category was associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (p<0.001), macrosomia (p=0.05) and neonatal hypoglycemia (p=0.03). There is no correlation between increase in BMI category and preeclampsia (p=0.067) as well as, intrauterine growth retardation (p=0.47) Conclusion: Increase in BMI category is associated with increase risk of maternal and fetal complication in the form of gestational diabetes mellitus, macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycemia." @default.
