- W1970858529 abstract "The affinity immobilization of ubiquinone-depleted reaction centers of photosynthetic bacteria Rhodobacter sphaeroides (R-26) has been obtained at a PtO electrode coated with a monolayer of covalently bound aminonaphtoquinone. To measure the surface concentration of the immobilized reaction centers they were labelled with [14C]iodoacetamide. The radioactivity measurements revealed a submonolayer coating of the reaction centers (approx. 10−12 mol/cm2). The coupling of photoinduced charge separation in the immobilized reaction centers with electron transfer to the quinonoid-modified electrode was achieved when the reduced cytochrome c was addedto the solution as an electron donor. Small anodic photocurrent and photovoltage resulted from this coupling. A considerable increase of photoeffect without changing the direction of the electron transfer was found upon addition of exogeneous ubiquinone-10 (UQ-2) functioning as a diffusionally mobile mediator of the electron transfer from the immobilized reaction centers to the electrode. In this case photocurrent density under the short-circuit condition and open-circuit photovoltage were found to be equal to 0.2 μA/cm2 and 40 mV, respectively. Anodic photocurrent was observed only at the potentials more positive than approx. +0.1 V when oxidation of the reduced form of ubiquinone-10 was thermodynamically possible. Under monochromatic illumination at 860 nm (the absorption band of P-860) a quantum efficiency of the photocurrent formation and a power conversion efficiency for the absorbed light were 5% and 0.025%, respectively. The electrochemical oxidation of the photoreduced quinones at the electrode is suggested to be a limiting stage in the photocurrent formation. This shows the ways of the further increase of the photoelectric energy converter efficiency on the basis of reaction centers." @default.
