Much of this work has focussed on different mays of conceptualising the problem and on approaches to intervention. Surprisingly little has been written on how educational psychologists actually assess children referred to them as having emotional and behavioural problems (EBD). This article attempts to redress the balance by presenting the main findings of a study conducted by one of the authors (McCall, 1991). The study required educational psychologists to complete a questionnaire on the methods they used to assess a child who had been referred to them as having ‘emotional and behavioural difficulties’.
