• W1971054625 abstract "The amounts of volatile liquid and cold ring fraction (CRF) products in the degradation of several anionic and a free radical polystyrene (PS) sample have been determined gravimetrically for degradations under vacuum at 300°C, over the range 5–60% volatilisation. The ratio has been found to fall sharply from a value indicating a predominance of monomer over CRF products, which is dependent on the initial molecular weight of the polymer, and reach a constant value in the range 0·8–1·0 for all the samples. Volatile liquid products in degradations of PS at 300°, 350° and 420°C have been separated and identified using GC-MS. Amongst the minor products from sodium naphthalenide initiated PS have been established several which can clearly be related to the head to head linkage. The major and minor CRF products have also been characterised. The degradation mechanism of PS is reconsidered in the light of the new evidence. It is concluded that, initially, intramolecular transfer (which generates CRF products) is impeded by the high melt viscosity, and intermolecular transfer (which leads to a fall in molecular weight) is favoured. After about 25% volatilisation, however, intermolecular transfer is of little importance and intramolecular transfer becomes the main transfer reaction, so that the proportion of CRF products is greater. The secondary PS macroradical continues to be regarded as the main source of volatile and CRF products. The reactions of the primary PS macroradical are discussed." @default.
