- W1971309407 abstract "Abstract Attempts were made to study the factors and mechanisms which govern differences in radiosensitivity between diploid species with identical chromosome numbers and similar nuclear volumes. The plant material selected for this purpose consisted of the 2 tomatoes, Lycopersicum esculentum, L. pimpinellifolium, their reciprocal hybrids and the 8 back-cross lines. Among the six parameters of sensitivity which were studied, nuclear volume, nuclear DNA content and mitotic index were investigated only in the two parental species whereas the analysis of growth-rate and of apical size in embryos and seedlings was extended to all 12 genotypes. The 12 genotypes were exposed to chronic (90 days from the 2nd leaf stage), semi-acute (10 days from the 2nd leaf stage) and acute (dry seed) irradiation. The results obtained indicated that only two biological parameters, growth-rate and apical size in the growing plant, were consistently related to the large genetic differences in radiation response which were observed in each experiment. The genotypes which are relatively tolerant to chronic irradiation are markedly sensitive to acute or semi-acute treatment. As these genotypes were always characterized by a fast growth-rate and a low number of cells in the apex, the conclusion is reached that the genetic differences in radiation responses essentially result from variations in the dose received per cell cycle and per ontogenetic stage in the case of chronic treatment and from differences in somatic elimination processes after acute and semi-acute irradiation. No genotypic differences in radiation responses for seed-set per fruit could be recorded, however, after high dose-rate irradiation of seeds and seedlings. Such a finding is taken as an indication that either a different mechanism of radiosensitivity is controlling the plant response at mature stages or that somatic elimination processes ultimately level off all variations in radio-induced damages." @default.
