- W1971396589 abstract "The Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) will be a long-lived observatory intended to carry out X-ray studies from space. Much of the design for AXAF has been predicated on the highly successful HEAO-2/ Einstein X-ray observatory that NASA operated from 1978 until 1981. AXAF has been under study for several years under the direction of Marshall Space Flight Center assisted by our group at Smithsonian Astro-physical Observatory. AXAF has recently completed the preliminary design/definition stage, Phase B. Two teams of industrial contractors have studied the overall observatory to understand the requirements, to develop design concepts, and to formulate an overall technical basis for building AXAF. Moreover, four focal plane scientific instruments and two sets of gratings have been selected and studied for nearly three years. AXAF is a prime candidate for a formal new start to begin construction in FY89, with a planned launch date in 1995." @default.
