The theory is applied to the stimulated desorption of particles physisorbed at a metal surface. It is found that the dynamical effects crucially influence a position dependence of the neutralization rate in the crossover region in which the valence level of the particle intersects either edge of a filled electronic band in the metal. The neutralization rate does not follow the density of states of the band near its edge, and significant deviations from the golden-rule formula are predicted. How the neutralization rate approaches the values predicted by the golden rule with an increase of the particle mass and/or a decrease of the distance between the region of the primary excitation (triggering the desorption process) and the onset of the crossover is also made clear." @default.
