- W1971488855 abstract "The limits of scintillation decay time (t) in polystyrene of ≈2 nsec have been recognized, and the combinations of extinction coefficient (e) and fluorescence quantum yield (FQE) required to obtain this decay time from a fluor with a specific emission wavelength peak have been delineated. Some oligophenylenes with very high light output, fast decay time, and good radiation hardness were discovered; but, while useful in plates, their emission wavelengths are too short for use in fibers without suitable shifters. A new proprietary shifter from Bicron, Inc., was reported which gave good attenuation lengths in polystyrene, very fast decay time, and moderate radiation hardness. Many derivatives of 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF) have been prepared to improve all of the above properties as well as improving solubility in polystyrene, in some cases by copolymerizing vinyl derivatives of 3HF A new derivative of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) called CNHBT tripled the FQE of HBT and improved other properties making CNHBT comparable with 3HF overall. A promising new family of proprietary fluors from Nanoptics, Inc., was reported which are apparently superior to 3HF in all properties, except for emission wavelength peaks 30 nm shorter." @default.
