- W1971521766 abstract "Sound familiar? Perhaps, but this stock answer from the nurse recruiter may soon become a distant memory as more and more nursing graduates are being hired to work in those very same critical care areas because of the changing landscape of healthcare. Fewer nurses and sicker patients mean one thing: inexperienced nurses caring for complex patients. If this is the new reality, how can we ensure that these nurses have the confidence, and competence, to provide safe, effective patient care? To answer this question, Colorado's Work, Education & Lifelong Learning Simulation (WELLS) Center developed a simulation based Critical Care Nursing Course. Using the American Association of Critical Care Nurses' Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) course as a foundation, the WELLS Center and their partners designed an 80-hour course that included high fidelity simulation scenarios and use of the VH Dissector, the world's first human dissection simulator, and other interactive learning methodologies. In May of 2008, the WELLS Center partnered with the HealthONE system, the largest healthcare system in metro Denver. HealthONE provided the WELLS Center with its pilot group; 11 new graduate nurses from schools across the country that were selected for the inaugural HealthONE Critical Care Nursing Fellowship. In addition, HealthONE provided added support with critical care clinical nurse specialists. The 10-week pilot was launched on July 1st, 2008. In addition to the fellows' online learning, a typical week included simulation training and VH Dissector anatomy review, clinical observation, and hospital orientation. On September 9th, 2008, the fellows completed their final day of simulation with their Capstone experience at the WELLS Center and graduated on September 15th, 2008 in a ceremony held on the campus of HealthONE. Currently, all 11 new graduates are now working as fully licensed critical care nurses in one of HealthONE's seven metro area hospitals. Evaluation feedback from the pilot participants was overwhelmingly positive and will be discussed in this presentation along with the collaborative nature of this project, best practices, lessons learned, and future direction." @default.
