- W1971632912 abstract "The results of a number of studies suggest that stimulus-bound feeding and drinking may be dependent upon the oronasal sensations which normally accompany feeding and drinking. Rats bearing electrodes in the lateral hypothalamus were given daily threshold tests for stimulus-bound feeding and drinking in their home cages. After their thresholds stabilized they were subjected to anosmia by suction of the olfactory bulbs, or to partial ageusia by bilateral transection of the lingual, chorda tympani and lateral branch of the glossopharyngeal nerves. None of these denervations, either separately or in combination, had any consistent effect on the thresholds. In two rats self-stimulation was also studied and was found to be only moderately reduced by the denervations. The implications of these data are discussed in terms of current theories of the mechanisms underlying stimulus-bound behaviors." @default.
