- W1971657900 abstract "I will address both the substance and ethics of the research reported in Confirmational Response Bias among Social Work Journals (Epstein, this issue). But first, some history. In spring 1987, Social Service Review received for review a manuscript entitled Sustaining the Effects of a 'Parentectomy' on Asthmatic Children through Contracting and Family Therapy. In the course of review, we discovered that a substantial part of the manuscript was plagiarized from previously published work. The submission also contained a number of other problems including erroneous references and references to nonexistent journals. Upon discovery of these problems, we attempted to identify the of the piece. Our efforts were not successful. The return address on the cover letter for the submission was a post office box and the authors' institutional affiliations were not given. In addition, the sites of the research were not provided. I wrote to the authors concerning the plagiarism and other problems. I received a reply indicating that the submission was bogus, part of a study of journal review practices. The reply made it clear that the names of the authors were false. However, the authors continued to use the false names. I attempted to obtain more information from the authors concerning the objectives and design of the study. These efforts were unsuccessful. Because my suspicions were thoroughly aroused and I could not be sure of the veracity of this letter, I wrote to a number of social service and medical journals inquiring as to whether they had also received the article. A number" @default.
