- W1971700518 abstract "Abstract The threshold entrainment velocity for Martian conditions has been calculated using the forcebalance model for particle entrainment (Phillips, 1980) and has been found to be in reasonable agreement with the corresponding predictions of Iversen and White (1982) based on their low-pressure wind tunnel measurements. This agreement provides good evidence for the physical correctness of the force-balance model, and leads to re-interpretation of Iversen and White's conclusions on the relationship between cohesion forces and particle size. Comparison of Iversen and White's correlation with the force-balance model shows that certain terms in their correlation appear in physically inappropriate places, and suggestions are offered for improving their correlation in this respect. Predictions from the entrainment correlation suggested by Fletcher (1976b) have been found to be in poor agreement with the above mentioned data so that this correlation cannot be recommended for non-terrestrial conditions. Suggestions are made for changes in this correlation which lead to considerable improvement in the predictions for Mars, without degrading predictive performance for Earth." @default.
