- W197178575 abstract "This chapter describes gut bacteria, steroids, and the cancer of the large bowel. The composition of the intestinal bacterial flora is dependent on the nature of the diet. The nature of the diet also determines the types and amounts of compounds that come into contact with the bacterial flora. Intestinal bacteria are able to form carcinogens from dietary components or from digestive secretions. The bile acids are possible substrates for the production of carcinogens by gut bacteria. The chapter also discusses the degradation of bile salts by isolated bacterial strains. It describes the production of carcinogens by intestinal bacteria. There are four principal reactions by which double bonds are introduced into the steroid nucleus by bacterial action: (1) introduction of a double bond conjugated to a keto group, (2) introduction of a double bond via a dehydration reaction, (3) ketoenolization following oxidative dimethylation, and (4) introduction of a double bond in conjugation with other double bonds." @default.
