To investigate the physiological properties of lateral line organs and external taste buds in the minnow, summated responses to chemical and thermal stimuli were recorded from the buccal and maxillary nerves.2.2. External taste buds were very sensitive to HCl, quinine-HCl (Q-HCl) and NaCl, the thresholds for which lay between 10−5 M and 3 × 10−5 M, and responded also to sucrose. Lateral line organs were most sensitive to HCl. the threshold for which was at around 10−5 M, moderately to NaCl and Q-HCl, and insensitive to sucrose.3.3. Stimulatory effectiveness of various monovalent salts depended on cations rather than anions in the buccal nerve, but the reverse relation was true for the maxillary nerve.4.4. In the buccal nerve a fall of temperature of the upper snout produced a marked response, while a rise of temperature caused reduction of the base line discharge. No responses to thermal changes were found in the maxillary nerve.5.5. It is concluded that response specificities of lateral line organs for chemical and thermal stimuli make a sharp contrast to those of external taste buds." @default.
