- W1972126812 abstract "Mice reared on a purified, semi-synthetic diet without added p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) were only slightly susceptible, if at all, to blood-induced Plasmodium berghei infection. The mouse does not appear to require a dietary source of PABA since growth rate was unaffected by omission of this factor and no deficiency symptoms were detected. The oral administration of PABA at the time of infection to mice fed a PABA-deficient diet restored full susceptibility to infection and promoted normal development of the parasite; at least 1.0 mg PABA/mouse was required to support maximum development of parasitemia. While PABA was completely effective in promoting the development of P. berghei in mice fed a folic acid-deficient diet, folic acid only partially substituted for PABA in mice fed a PABA-deficient diet. Although P. berghei was susceptible to inhibition by folic acid antagonists (aminopterin, pyrimethamine), mice reared on a folic acid-deficient diet containing added PABA developed a higher degree of parasitemia than controls supplemented with folic acid. A pyrimethamine-resistant strain of P. berghei was found to have a greater requirement for PABA than a normal strain for development in the mouse." @default.
