- W1972196828 abstract "Various forms of non-volitional verbal behaviour manifest themselves in language pathology. At times the very act of speaking is unintentional. The sufferer utters words in spite of himself. Though the patient would like to keep silent, he/she cannot help speaking. In other cases the patient can choose freely between speaking and keeping silent, but if (s)he decides to speak, the patient is likely to utter words different from those (s)he really intends. Indeed, the same word or phrase may constantly come over their lips irrespective of what they want to say. In other cases meaningless strings of phonemes are unknowingly substituted for the words that should make up the utterance. There are also patients who cannot help repeating several times the words which they have elected to use. They may also make involuntary repetitions within words, or they may speak faster or slower than they would like. In all these cases one or several aspects of speech production which are normally under the subject's control become self-governed. They no longer obey the subject's will. The speaker exhibits a verbal behaviour which (s)he did not intend." @default.
