- W1972273085 abstract "Neurologic symploms are frequently detected in children with HIV infeclion and some times fhey are ihe first evidenceof the disease. Nervous system compromise in such patients may be due lo a direct action of the HIV on neural tissues ora consequence of the immune deficiency, through secondary viral, bacleiial, parasytic or fungal, uncontrolled infections, tumors or cerebrovascular accidents associated with immune vasculitides or thrombocytopenia. The first mechanism ismore frequent in children, parliculorly when they are infected early in life, while ihe second one is more usual in adults.HiV has neurothropic properties and is able lo locate in microdia and macrophage cells of the nervous system, causingacute meningoencephalitis, subacule usually progresive encephalopathy, myelitis, peripheral neuropathy and miopathy.M.osl importanl dinical signs and symploms of HIV encephalopathy in children are psychomotor retardation, lost orabsent progression of acquired skills, acquired microcephalus, progiesive pyramidal tract signs, and atlentional deficit.Treatment with immune globuline and zidovudine offers some favorable possibilities.[Key words: HIV, AIDS encephalopathy, neuritis, myelitis.)" @default.
