- W1972334812 abstract "The osmotic pressure of the haemocoelic fluid of freshwater Molluscs is generally low e.g. Limnaea stagnalis (72 mmoles) (Picken, 1937), Melanopsis trifasciata (42 mmoles) (Bedford, 1972), Viviparus viviparus (46 mmoles) (Little, 1965) and Hyridella australis (46 mmoles) (Hiscock, 1953). Outstanding amongst these is Anodonta cygnaea, the British pond mussel, which has the lowest known body fluid concentration (22 mmoles) of any Meta-zoan (Potts, 1958). This low concentration has generally been held to be a functional consequence of a large permeable surface area exposed to a dilute medium, which limits the capacity of these animals for regulation of the body fluids. The freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi has been discussed from the point of view of being a suitable model system for the concept of intracellular isosmotic regulation. The total osmotic pressure of the haemocoelic fluid in a range of media showed an increase with an increase in salinity of the media. The inorganic ions of the haemocoelic fluid that were measured (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and chloride) showed a similar increase with an increase in the environmental salinity apart from calcium and bicarbonate which remained at a steady level. Chloride and bicarbonate ions formed about 50 % each of the anionic contribution of the haemocoelic fluid. The conductivity and pH (8.2) of the haemocoelic fluid were also measured. The organic fraction of the haemocoelic fluid was low — there being little soluble protein present and only traces of amino acids. The extracellular space and the total water content of the muscle tissue was measured. The amino acids in the muscle tissue increased more than would be expected by mere dilution. The bulk of this increase was made up of alanine, glutamic acid, glutamine, and lysine. The concentration of the inorganic ions within the muscle tissue was also calculated." @default.
