- W1972539976 abstract "SummaryThe concept that the adrenal gland plays a central role in the stress response of the fowl to actually or potentially harmful stimuli is re-examined in the light of work that has been published during the past four years. It is concluded that whilst the stress response, often though not invariably, involves the adrenal it is not appropriate to assume that all adrenal responses indicate stress. It seems generally accepted that stress is an undesirable, even harmful, state. It follows therefore that any measurement should be directed towards some “negative” parameter. Reduced immunological function might be a suitable candidate measure. Alternatively, measurement of specific “stress proteins” might be appropriate. The difficulties of using physiological measures of adrenal activity in the debate on welfare are briefly outlined." @default.
