- W1972633850 abstract "Earlier studies [Whalen, J. Acoust. Sec. Am. (1981); Mann and Repp, Percep. Psychopys. 28, 213–228 (1980)] have shown that vocalic formant transitions contribute to the [s]-[sš] distinction if the noise cue is ambiguous between [s] and [sš]. It is not clear, however, whether the transitions have any perceptual effect when the noise cue is unambiguous. To see if they do, a reaction time study using natural tokens of [sa], [sša], [su], and [sšu], was run. Each vocalic portion of these syllables was combined with each noise portion. In one condition, the subjects were asked to identify the fricative only ([s] or [sš]); in a second condition, they had to identify the whole syllable ([sa],[sša],[su],[sšu]). In the two-choice condition, there was no significant difference in reaction times to the stimuli with appropriate and inappropriate transitions. In the four-choice condition, however, reaction times were significantly longer when the transitions were inappropriate. This difference indicates that an inessential cue can have an effect in perception, if the subjects must wait until after that cue has occurred to make their identification.
