As a consequence, the carrier concentration $n$ is given exactly by $n=|frac{J}{[e{ensuremath{mu}}_{p}(b+1)frac{doverline{ensuremath{varphi}}}{mathrm{dx}}]}|$ where $J$ is the current density. This relation constitutes a powerful tool for measuring $n$. The experimental evidence was found from measurements on silicon $pensuremath{-}iensuremath{-}n$ structures forward biased into the double injection region where $nensuremath{approx}p$. The observed potential drops $ensuremath{Delta}V$ at the $pensuremath{-}i$ and $nensuremath{-}i$ junctions were compared with the values of the carrier concentrations ${n}_{1}$ at the junctions. The theoretical relation between $ensuremath{Delta}V$ and ${n}_{1}$ depends strongly on the assumption that $overline{ensuremath{varphi}}$ is the quantity measured by the probe. Thus the fact that the experimental data agree with the above mentioned theoretical relation is a strong confirmation of the use of $overline{ensuremath{varphi}}$. Theoretical arguments suggest that the generalization to the case $nensuremath{ne}p$ is given by $overline{ensuremath{varphi}}=frac{(n{ensuremath{mu}}_{n}{ensuremath{varphi}}_{n}+p{ensuremath{mu}}_{p}{ensuremath{varphi}}_{p})}{(n{ensuremath{mu}}_{n}+p{ensuremath{mu}}_{p})}$." @default.
