- W1972693002 abstract "We thank Drs. Mehta and Fowler for their comments regarding the use of hypofractionation in the treatment of early-stage non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Assuming that tumor repopulation starts after 28 days of radiotherapy with a tumor-doubling time of 3 days, they have calculated the tumor biological equivalent dose (BED) normalized to 2 Gy fractions for various dose-fractionation schemes (listed in their Table 1), which have the same late BED for normal tissues as the reference dose of 48 Gy delivered in once-daily 4 Gy fractions reported by us previously ( 1 Cheung P.C. Yeung L.T. Basrur V. et al. Accelerated hypofractionation for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 2002; 54: 1014-1023 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (57) Google Scholar ). The tumor control probability (as expressed by 3-year disease-free survival) for each of these dose-fractionation schemes was also estimated, normalized to the 3-year disease-free survival of 30% observed in our study of mostly stage 1 NSCLC patients treated with the previously mentioned hypofractionated regimen ( 1 Cheung P.C. Yeung L.T. Basrur V. et al. Accelerated hypofractionation for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 2002; 54: 1014-1023 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (57) Google Scholar ). Accelerated hypofractionationInternational Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, PhysicsVol. 61Issue 1PreviewA recent article by Cheung et al. on accelerated fractionation for early-stage non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) reported reasonably good 3-year results (30% OSS, 36% CSS, 30% RFS) for their hypofractionated schedule (overall survival, cancer specific survival, and recurrence free survival) (1). This schedule employed 12 fractions of 4 Gy each, given in just over 2 weeks, with 33 patients. One major conclusion was that this procedure was safe, although treatment duration was as short as 16.2 days mean overall time. Full-Text PDF" @default.
